Special swimming for disabled children Mon, 05 Jul 2010 05:56:55 GMT newsletter@westwight.co.uk (Bob Beresford)

West Wight Sports Centre to provide short break activities for families with disabled children

West Wight Sports Centre is offering weekly swimming sessions for families with disabled children throughout the school holidays.

Through a partnership with the Isle of Wight Council and NHS Isle of Wight they are providing a range of planned short breaks for disabled children, thanks to funding provided by the Aiming High for Disabled Children scheme.

Initially the project will allow families with disabled children to swim during a special session every Friday in the school holidays from 10 – 11am starting on July 23rd. The charge for this will be £2.35 per head (friends and siblings are welcome). There are plans to extend this session to a weekly term time session and also to be able to provide better access to swimming lessons for disabled children either through additional support during mainstream lessons or through private one-to-one lessons. There will also be music-based sessions in the pool.

To support the project staff are being trained in the Halliwick method of swimming; a specialised method of teaching disabled people to enjoy and benefit from being in water as well as general disability awareness training being provided for all staff.

It will be the same as always but we will have a timekeeper and marshal at the lights on Milly Road and the time spent stopped at lights will be deducted from your overall time. This is the safest and fairest way of doing it. Changing the route would involve more than one right hand turn which is not only more dangerous but also potentially adds more delays. West Wight Sports Centre invests in solar power Thu, 10 Jun 2010 08:00:09 GMT newsletter@westwight.co.uk (Bob Beresford)

West Wight Sports Centre makes investment in solar energy.

West Wight Sports Centre Trust, the registered charity that runs West Wight Sports Centre has received grant funding to install both solar electric (photovoltaic) and solar hot water panels and to install cavity wall insulation.

The project was completed at the end of March and has been fully operational since April 1st. The Trust will be saving money and carbon emissions by using less electricity from traditional non-renewable sources  and less gas for heating the swimming pool water.

The project consists of 66 photovoltaic panels generating up to 11.88 kw of electricity alongside 27 solar hot water panels, 9 of which are used to heat water in the small (10 x 5 mtr) pool, and 18 of which are used to heat water in the main (25 x 13 mtr) pool.

The Project has been grant funded from CSEP (Community Sustainable Energy Programme), The Low Carbon Building Fund, Isle of Wight Economic Partnership Leader Programme and the AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) Development fund. The Isle of Wight Lottery also helped with an interest free loan in order to cover the gap between payments and receipts of grants which were all retrospective. The installation was carried out by New World Solar.

In the first three months of operation (March - May 2010), 4788 kwh of electricity were generated from the sun’s rays. This electricity is used directly by the Centre, amounting to a cost saving to date of £595. On top of this the solar hot water system provided a further 1924 kwh of heat to the swimming pools.

The amount of savings will vary over the year and is dependent on the strength and amount of hours that the sun shines. However, the Centre expects to make savings of around £3,000 over the course of a year.

Energy costs form a significant part of the Centre’s running costs – in the coming financial year (2010- 2011) it is expected to be around £85,000. It would be much more than this without excellent housekeeping and energy monitoring undertaken by the staff - before the solar energy installations, electricity consumption had been reduced by 10,000 kwh from 2007 to 2009 and gas consumption by 55,000 kwh over the same period.

On Tuesday 15th June at 12 noon, Centre Manager, Clare Griffin and Trustees will be welcoming representatives of all the agencies involved to officially commission the equipment and to thank them for their support of the project. Press are invited to attend.
